Scutellaria (common name: skullcaps) is a genus of flowering plants in the mint family (Lamiaceae). The name comes from Latin scutella ("small dish"), referring to the shield‑like shape of the calyx, which also resembles a miniature medieval helmet. The genus has a near‑worldwide distribution, mainly in temperate regions. Most species are annual or perennial herbs (5–100 cm tall) with four‑angled stems, opposite leaves, and two‑lipped flowers; some are aquatic or subshrubs.
