Plantaginaceae (the plantain or veronica family) is a large, cosmopolitan family in the order Lamiales, including familiar flowers like snapdragon and foxglove. Traditionally limited to just three genera, phylogenetic studies expanded the family to include many former Scrophulariaceae. The conserved name Plantaginaceae (1789) takes precedence over Veronicaceae under ICBN rules. The family comprises herbs, shrubs, and some aquatic plants, with spiral to opposite leaves, variable often two-lipped flowers (4- to 8-merous), and loculicidal capsules. A related group (e.g., Lindernia) is now separated as Linderniaceae.
