Catnip (Nepeta cataria) Common Names: Catmint A short-lived perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. It grows 30–100 cm (12–39 inches) tall with square stems, grayish serrated leaves, and small fragrant flowers. Named for the intense attraction it holds for about two-thirds of cats, caused by the compound nepetalactone. Traditionally used in herbal teas for its mild sedative and relaxant properties. Warning: Catnip tea may cause drowsiness; avoid operating heavy machinery after consumption. Not recommended during pregnancy as it may stimulate uterine contractions. Large doses may cause mild digestive upset. For cats, excessive ingestion can lead to vomiting or diarrhea; use in moderation.
