Marsh Mallow (Althaea officinalis) A perennial herb in the mallow family (Malvaceae), native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. It grows up to 180 cm (6 feet) tall with softly hairy, lobed leaves and pale pink to lilac flowers that bloom in late summer. The roots are thick, tapering, and fibrous. Traditionally used in herbalism for soothing sore throats, coughs, and digestive irritation due to its mucilage content, which forms a protective film on mucous membranes. The root was historically used to create the original marshmallow confection. Warning: May slow absorption of other medications or supplements due to its high mucilage content; take at least one hour apart from other medications. Generally considered safe for culinary and medicinal use. If you have diabetes, monitor blood sugar levels, as marsh mallow may affect glucose absorption. Not enough reliable information on safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding; consult a healthcare professional before medicinal use.
