Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) A perennial herbaceous plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to south-central Europe, the Mediterranean, and Central Asia, now naturalized worldwide. It grows bushy and upright up to 1 meter (39 inches) tall with heart-shaped, softly hairy leaves that emit a mild lemon scent. Small white or pale pink flowers appear in summer. The genus name Melissa derives from the Greek word for "honey bee," reflecting the plant's attraction to bees. Traditionally used in herbalism for calming nerves, promoting sleep, and soothing digestive discomfort. Commonly enjoyed as a tea, culinary herb, and ingredient in Carmelite Water. Warning: May interact with thyroid medications, as lemon balm can inhibit thyroid hormone binding. Use with caution if taking thyroid medication or if you have a thyroid disorder. May cause drowsiness; avoid operating heavy machinery if sedative effects occur. Generally safe in culinary and tea amounts; consult a healthcare professional before medicinal use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
