Lavender (Lavandula spp.) A genus of 47 species of perennial flowering plants in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to the Mediterranean, parts of Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. Plants range from herbaceous perennials to small shrubs, with narrow, often hairy leaves and spikes of blue, violet, or lilac flowers. Widely cultivated for ornamental use, culinary applications, and the production of essential oil. Traditionally used in herbalism for calming nerves, aiding sleep, and soothing minor skin irritations. Warning: Lavender essential oil is highly concentrated and should not be taken internally without professional supervision. Topical use of essential oil should be diluted with a carrier oil to prevent skin irritation. May cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Not recommended for young boys prior to puberty in large or frequent medicinal amounts, as some studies suggest potential hormonal effects; culinary use is considered safe. Consult a healthcare professional before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
