Hyssopus officinalis

$3.50 / oz

Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) A shrub in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to Southern Europe, the Middle East, and the Caspian Sea region. It grows 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) tall with woody stems, lanceolate dark green leaves, and fragrant pink, blue, or white flowers. Traditionally used in herbalism as an expectorant and cough reliever, as well as for its antiseptic properties. Warning: Contains the volatile oil constituent pinoamphone, which can be neurotoxic in high doses. Do not ingest essential oil internally. Large or frequent doses of the herb may cause convulsions, particularly in children or individuals with seizure disorders. Not recommended during pregnancy, as it may stimulate uterine contractions. Use in culinary amounts is generally considered safe; avoid concentrated medicinal doses without professional guidance.
