Hibiscus (Hibiscus spp.) Common Names: Rose mallow, sorrel, Jamaican sorrel (for H. sabdariffa) A genus of flowering plants in the mallow family (Malvaceae), comprising several hundred species native to warm temperate, subtropical, and tropical regions worldwide. The genus includes annuals, perennials, shrubs, and small trees, renowned for large, showy flowers. Several species are widely cultivated as ornamentals, while Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle) is used culinarily and herbally for its tart, cranberry-like calyces. Traditionally used in teas for its cooling properties and high vitamin C content. Warning: May interact with antihypertensive medications, as hibiscus can lower blood pressure.
