Echinacea purpurea (Echinacea purpurea) Common Names: Eastern purple coneflower, purple coneflower, hedgehog coneflower A North American flowering species in the daisy family (Asteraceae), native to eastern and midwestern United States and Ontario, Canada. It is most common in the Ozarks, Mississippi Valley, and Ohio Valley, growing in dry open woods, prairies, and barrens. The common name "hedgehog coneflower" refers to the spiny central cone.
