A genus of flowering plants in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to North America. Common names include bee balm, bergamot, horsemint, and Oswego tea—the latter inspired by the Oswego Native Americans who used the leaves to make tea. Named for Spanish botanist Nicolás Monardes, who documented New World plants in 1574. The leaves have a fragrance reminiscent of bergamot orange (Citrus bergamia). Traditionally used in herbalism for respiratory support and as a soothing tea. Warning: Contains thymol, a compound with antimicrobial properties that can cause skin irritation or mucosal irritation in sensitive individuals when used in high concentrations. Dilute properly for topical use. Avoid use during pregnancy without professional guidance.
