Mongolian Milkvetch (Astragalus mongholicus) – Also known as Huang Qi, Mongolian milkvetch is a flowering perennial in the Fabaceae family, widespread in temperate Asia including Kazakhstan, Siberia, the Russian Far East, Mongolia, and northern and western China. It is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in traditional Mongolian medicine and is also used in traditional Chinese medicine. The roots contain naturally occurring compounds such as polysaccharides, triterpenoids (astragalosides), and isoflavones (including kumatakenin, calycosin, and formononetin). Unlike some other Astragalus species, this plant does not contain the indolizine alkaloids, nitro compounds, or accumulated selenium that cause livestock poisoning. It is listed in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia (as A. propinquus). Disclaimer: These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
