Catnip / Catmint (Nepeta spp.) – A genus of flowering plants in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to Europe, Asia, and Africa, and naturalized in North America. There are nearly 300 accepted species, most of which are herbaceous perennials with sturdy stems and opposite heart‑shaped, green to gray‑green leaves. The tubular flowers appear in spikes or clusters and can be lavender, blue, white, pink, or lilac with tiny purple dots. The genus contains nepetalactone, a compound that binds to olfactory receptors in house cats, often producing temporary euphoria. Some Nepeta species are cultivated as ornamental, drought‑tolerant, and deer‑repellent garden plants, and have been noted for their repellent properties against insect pests such as aphids and squash bugs. The flowers provide nectar for honey bees and hummingbirds, while the leaves are used as food by some butterfly and moth larvae. Notable species include Nepeta cataria (true catnip), Nepeta grandiflora (giant catmint), Nepeta × faassenii (garden catmint), and Nepeta racemosa (raceme catnip).
